Avoid a MASSIVE headache and Tons of Extra Work!
I was sick and tired of using this crappy foam sanding block - the velcro was getting clogged with crap and leaving micro scratches in my projects! I used the molding toolpath in vcarve to create some STUNNING solid wood heirloom sanding blocks!
Micro scratches, and possibly swirl marks, will show up on your project and you may not even know it. When using the random orbital sander, grit and course dust that is left on the sanding pad, will cause swirl marks, or pig tails, and debris trapped behind your hand - sanding disc, is no different!
Digital File - just download and cut away!

      @@kimberlyadams4446 thanks! I usually “cut” at 15 in/min and then just vary the passes depending on the hardness of the wood. Pine is less passes, Oak is more. That last tip seems to involve a lot of manual work that doesn't take advantage of the CNC's capabilities. Why use a jig and swap out trays one at a time when the trays and designs could all be done at once from one larger sheet? Trays are secured by little tabs and are released with a quick hit from an oscillating multi tool at the end? Bit changes and sanding would be done anyway.

    • @SJSSawdust
      @SJSSawdust Місяць тому

      @@GeekRedux thanks for the tips. If I were cutting this out of one large piece, let’s say padauk, from my experience, this would be very costly - I find it much cheaper to buy smaller pieces or, better yet, use off-cuts from past projects. Even more important than that, there is a lot of stored up tension in large slabs of wood. That tension will be released as these are cut and will almost certainly lead to cupping/warping that will lead to sub par results or could easily damage your end mill or CNC. If these were out of plywood, MDF or particle board - I would definitely nest 6 or 8 trays on one sheet and set my file up accordingly

    • @GeekRedux
      @GeekRedux Місяць тому

      @@SJSSawdust Okay, yeah, you make a good point about the stress in a large sheet. Maybe a plywood or mdf jig could allow you to lay out a dozen or so trays at a time? I guess I'm just getting unreasonably frustrated seeing that CNC being used to do a job that could be done with a benchtop 3018 lol

    • @MarkSWilliams27

      Ha - that's what I was thinking. But I think something similar could be done with a router table maybe. And some regular sandpaper. Both the foam sandpaper and the hook and loop are kind of expensive. Regular sheet sandpaper is expensive enough lately!

      @@MarkSWilliams27 yea, I agree. Everything is through the roof. If you have a bunch of the paper sheets, search John Heinz- he made a pretty cool block that uses the paper sheets, works well. I made a set of those about a year ago and use those as well

    Nice job. I made a few of these by hand a few years back, though mine use 1/4 sheets instead of discs. I tried one for discs, but the discs kept getting caught on things on the dust collection holes and ripping.

      @SJSSawdust 4 місяці тому

      Thanks. John Heinz made a video on a 1/4 sheet holder, I made a set of those about a year ago as well. My hands don’t grip the way they used to, so I found using this style that allows the block to be propelled by my palm seems to be easier on hand fatigue than trying to grip a block with my fingers. Question did you find that jtech unit on your onefinity wasn't worth it? I'm thinking about buying one 7w for some light engraving.

    • @SJSSawdust
      @SJSSawdust 4 місяці тому

      I thought it did good. I stopped using it for a couple of reasons. 1) I didn’t want to have my laptop in the workshop while using the laser ( needs to be connected to Lightburn, unlike the Onefinity which can be USB connected) I didn’t have a clean spot with a charger dedicated to it. 2) I wanted to be able to cut though material and I heard with the 7w it would take a bunch of passes ( which lead me to never actually try) 3) I was real particular about my wasteboard ( at the time) and didn’t want to leave it full of burn marks ( which is moot now because it’s all chewed up) lol. The 7w did good for the engravings I asked of it. What else is nice is the fact that you can use the laser for your entire work area, in my case 32” x 32” ( more like 30” x 30”) which is almost 4 times the surface area of most of the dedicated diode lasers out there. I (think) onefjnity offers a 40w attachment , which could cut no problem - might be worth comparing the cost of each unit. Hope this helps!

    Great info and I feel the same about my Onefinity X-50 Journeyman that I've had for about 2 years now. Regarding drag chains, the current Pro and Elite series now come with factory drag chains. The older and current X-35/X-50 do not come with drag chains. As you said, those are optional purchases through the Onefinity site. My X-50 Journeyman did not come with drag chains, so I ordered them from Amazon, then never installed them.

    I also own the ONEFINITY WOODWORKER and would certainly advise anyone wanting to get into the hobby to put it on their list to purchase. Over my 3 years of ownership I have upgraded to the Heavy Duty Z20 with the PWN VFD 1.5 kw spindle package. A true plug and play product and anyone looking for spindle kits should also check out PWNCNC. They have kits for almost all machines out there. I love the capabilities and performance of my ONEFINITY and before I switched to a spindle the ONEFINITY machine was very impressive using the standard Makita Router. I mainly changed over from the router to rid myself from the loud router noise but I got many more benefits from the change over . I'm Very happy I switched to a spindle now and am so impressed with how the spindle upgrade seemed to change the entire quality of this machine and now makes it even more enjoyable.
